Voice (Graduate)

Applicants for the M.M. and D.M.A. degrees must complete an audition, including the following sample audition group of repertoire (with a total length of approximately 20 minutes):

  1. A selection in English.
  2. An Italian song.
  3. A German lied.
  4. A French art song.
  5. An oratorio selection or an aria.

All selections must be memorized. Applicants may bring their own accompanist, or one will be provided (without charge). Applicants seeking financial aid in the form of an assistantship or fellowship, must audition on-campus

Please note: All voice students auditioning at a regional site must provide their own accompanist.

Vocal Performance Candidates: Pre-screening CD along with Part A of the University's application, professional resume, and the application fee must be submitted by December 1. Only CD recordings will be reviewed; other media-types will not be considered. Selections should include a minimum of three pieces, and recording should be no longer than 15 minutes in total length. See audition requirements listed above for suggested styles. Submitted recordings will remain property of the University of Illinois School of Music. Under no circumstances will submitted recordings be returned.

Please label recording with your full name and "Prescreening Voice." A limited number of applicants will be invited to audition. Please indicate to the Music Admissions Office which audition dates you are available for attending if selected.
